A Kumasi radio presenter accused of spreading false information about a deadly helicopter crash has been released on bail after two weeks in custody.
Emmanuel Kwakye Asare of Wontumi FM was arrested on August 12, 2025, and charged with one count of offensive conduct for allegedly broadcasting false news meant to incite fear and panic.
On Tuesday, the Accra Circuit Court granted him bail set at GH₵100,000 with two sureties, both required to be civil servants. His legal team is working to meet the conditions ahead of his next court appearance on September 1, 2025.
The charge is linked to a claim Asare made during his programme, suggesting that President John Dramani Mahama had prior knowledge of the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people.
Prosecutors fought against granting bail, arguing that investigations were ongoing. But presiding judge Samuel Bright Acquah reportedly disagreed, pointing to precedent. He recalled an earlier case where an individual was remanded for insulting then-President Akufo-Addo, saying there was no justification to repeat such a decision.
