Ghana’s former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has reportedly passed on.
Multiple reports cited family sources have confirmed her death, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, October 23, at the Ridge Hospital. However, the Rawlings family has not yet issued an official statement.
Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast in Ghana’s Central Region, Nana Konadu was widely celebrated as a pioneering political figure, women’s rights advocate, and a pillar of strength in national development. As the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, who passed in 2020, she played an integral role in shaping Ghana’s modern political history.
Her leadership extended beyond her years as First Lady. After breaking away from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), she founded the National Democratic Party (NDP), where she continued her push for social justice and gender equality.
In recent months, Nana Konadu has remained visible in public life. She attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Jubilee House to honor eight public servants who died in a helicopter crash. She was also present at the Dote Yie funeral rites for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, where she was accompanied by her children, Amina and Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings, to console Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
