MPs to Sacrifice GH¢1,000 Each as Parliament Joins Breast Cancer Fight

Ghana's Speaker of Parliament - Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin

Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced that all 276 Members of Parliament will contribute part of their November salaries to help fight breast cancer.

During Friday’s parliamentary sitting, Speaker Bagbin revealed that GH¢1,000 would be deducted from each MP’s salary and the total sum would be donated to the Breast Society of Ghana to bolster its awareness and treatment initiatives.

“The Office will deduct one thousand Ghana cedis from each member’s salary for the month of November to be dedicated to the fight that we are all engaged in, the Cancer Awareness Month,” the Speaker said.

He further disclosed that his office would top up the GH¢276,000 raised through the deductions to GH¢300,000. The final amount, he noted, will be presented to the Breast Society of Ghana in support of its ongoing advocacy, screening, and treatment programs.

“This is a very important matter. I have seen and witnessed how devastating breast cancer is to our women. I think that if we had had some of these statements earlier on, we could have done more,” Speaker Bagbin added.

The initiative forms part of activities marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which highlights the urgent need for early detection, treatment access, and national support for women affected by the disease.
