Erectile Dysfunction Drug Found in Popular Irish Cream Drink – FDA Orders Recall

Food and Drugs Authority

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has ordered an immediate recall of the popular Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink after discovering it was laced with Sildenafil Citrate, a potent prescription drug typically used to treat erectile dysfunction.

In a public alert issued from Accra on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the FDA confirmed that the beverage, produced by 1 Africa Industries Limited, had been adulterated with the undeclared drug, putting unsuspecting consumers at risk.

Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Manso Opuni, the Authority’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, said the presence of Sildenafil in a drink sold as food is dangerous, particularly for individuals taking certain prescriptions.

He cautioned that the chemical could trigger severe health reactions, especially when combined with medications like nitroglycerin, which could cause a sharp drop in blood pressure and result in serious complications such as heart attack or stroke.

The FDA highlighted further dangers tied to prolonged Sildenafil use, including potential loss of vision or hearing, painful or prolonged erections, and even psychological dependence.

Prof. Opuni confirmed the manufacturer is cooperating with the recall process, adding that tampering with food products violates Section 100 (4) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).

The Authority has advised all consumers, retailers, and distributors to immediately cease selling or consuming the product and to report any attempts to circulate it to the nearest FDA office.

The FDA said it will step up market surveillance to protect public health and ensure that all alcoholic and food products meet safety standards.
