The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates results alongside sweeping sanctions for breaches recorded during the exams. Hundreds of candidates have lost their entire results, while thousands more face cancellations or withheld scripts as investigations continue.
According to the council, 653 candidates had their entire results cancelled after they were found with mobile phones inside examination halls. WAEC also noted that 6,295 candidates forfeited results in specific subjects for entering with unauthorised materials, including prepared notes, textbooks and printed sheets.
Further actions include holding the subject results of 908 candidates and the entire results of another 158 for various reported offences. WAEC added that “yet still, some subject results of candidates from 185 schools have been withheld for alleged collusion. These cases are still under investigation,” as stated by the Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, in the official release.
The statement also disclosed that 19 individuals have already faced the law, receiving fines or custodial sentences for compromising the integrity of the exams. These individuals were part of 35 people, including 19 teachers, who were implicated in malpractice. “The remaining 16 are yet to be presented before the courts by the police. Beyond what the courts may decide, the list of teachers will be presented to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service for further disciplinary action,” the statement emphasised.
WAEC indicated that login credentials would be shared with heads of schools to access their candidates’ results. Candidates may also check their grades via the council’s website, www.waecgh.org
. The council warned the public to be vigilant, noting the rise of scammers promising to alter grades for a fee. “Candidates are to note that WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated using its results verification system,” the statement said.
This year, 461,736 candidates from 1,021 schools registered for the exams, slightly up from the 460,611 recorded in 2024. Of the total number, 5,821 candidates were absent.
A breakdown of performance showed varied outcomes across core subjects. In English Language, 289,673 candidates secured A1 to C6, representing 60 per cent. Mathematics saw 48.73 per cent attaining the same band, while Integrated Science recorded 57.74 per cent and Social Studies 55.82 per cent. Each of these figures is lower than the performance trends recorded in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
WAEC’s release coincided with an advisory from the University of Ghana to prospective applicants. The university urged applicants to revisit the UG applications portal to verify the accuracy of their personal details and exam data. It encouraged students to consult the 2024/2025 cut-off aggregates at https://admissions.ug.edu.gh/undergraduate/cut-off
and make realistic programme selections.
Additionally, the university announced that admissions for the 2025/2026 academic year remain open, with e-vouchers available at designated banks or via the USSD code 8779#. A notice from the Director of Academic Affairs, Lydia Anowa Nyako-Danquah, stated that the application portal would close on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at 5 p.m.
