Veteran Ghanaian gospel singer Maame Tiwaa, renowned for her commanding vocals with the Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo band, has been confirmed dead. She passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Born Mary Tiwaa, she stood as a towering presence in Ghana’s contemporary gospel landscape for more than three decades, earning deep admiration for both her vocal strength and the spiritual intensity she brought to every performance.

Maame Tiwaa became a household name through her unforgettable contributions to several of Asomafo’s iconic songs, among them Wo Haw Ne Sen?, Awurade Ka Me Ho, Yen Fa Oye Nkoaa, and Mensuro. These songs grew into enduring favourites in Christian homes and worship gatherings across the country.

Apart from her group performances, she captivated audiences with her soul-stirring solo ministrations, often described as both deeply anointed and profoundly uplifting.

Her voice, warm yet powerful, became inseparable from the signature sound of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, helping solidify the group’s status as one of Ghana’s most influential gospel collectives.
