Efya Says She’s “Sweet,” Not Arrogant, and Won’t Tolerate Disrespect

Efya

Ghanaian singer Efya has reacted to the long-running assumptions about her demeanor, saying the public often mistakes her grounded nature and firm boundaries for standoffishness.

In a recent discussion with Anita Akuffo on TV3, Efya said misconceptions usually arise from how people approach public figures. She explained that many individuals interact with celebrities as though they are owed something, creating unfair impressions when expectations are not met.

She said the notion that she is difficult or unfriendly frequently reflects the attitude people bring into their encounters with her. “People think I’m not a nice person, it’s because I’m much grounded, I guess,” the singer averred.

Efya added that some listeners assume that streaming an artist’s work grants them license to speak without restraint, a mindset she strongly rejects. “It depends on the kind of energy you come to me with and most people feel very entitled when it comes to celebrity. Just because you feel you stream my music doesn’t mean you can tell me some things you know you’re not supposed to tell me,” she stressed.

She pointed to social media, especially Twitter, as a space where people overstep because they believe there are no boundaries.

“Sometimes, people go off a little bit on Twitter and feeling themselves but it’s not fun and games till I show up in your house,” she stated.

While she is firm about how she expects to be treated, Efya emphasized that she is warm and kind at her core. “I’m a very nice person when you get to know me, I’m actually the sweetest person. I just don’t like disrespect so if you bring that on me, we will have a problem,” she posited.

She encouraged fans and social media users to engage respectfully, noting that everyone is entitled to their viewpoint but that she responds differently when disrespect enters the conversation. “A lot of people go hard on Twitter because they feel it’s a free space. Everybody is allowed to their mind-set but I choose to keep it respectful till you cross the line,” Efya further stated.
