Gunfire broke out on the Zebilla–Widnaba stretch in the Upper East Region on Sunday night, leaving a police officer dead after suspected armed robbers targeted a patrol team responding to a reported robbery.

The shooting reportedly occurred around 8 pm on February 8, 2026, when two officers were travelling from Widnaba towards Zebilla. Reports indicate that the officers ran into an active robbery operation along the route, triggering a violent confrontation.

Suspected robbers allegedly opened fire immediately after spotting the officers, striking one of them during the exchange.

The wounded officer, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was transported to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital by a police reinforcement team that responded to an emergency alert. Medical staff later confirmed he had died upon arrival.

In a statement, the Regional Police Command announced that a comprehensive investigation has been initiated. Authorities have also deployed a special operation aimed at tracking and apprehending those behind the attack.

The command further assured residents within the Bawku Division and surrounding communities of its resolve to maintain public safety, despite growing security concerns along key transport corridors in the area.
