Long before she became one of Ghana’s most celebrated gospel voices, Stella Aba Seal says she paid a personal price for standing her ground at work.
Speaking to Kafui Dey in an interview, the multiple award-winning singer opened up about the circumstances that led to her departure from her first two jobs. She said both positions ended not because she lacked competence, but because she refused to accept the conditions her employers tried to impose.
According to her, the demands went beyond professional expectations. After office hours, she said, her bosses routinely invited her out and made it clear that compliance was expected.
“The first two bosses, I didn’t like either of them because of the kind of conditions they attached to the job. After work, they would say, ‘Let’s go and sit somewhere and have a beer.’ I told them, ‘We’ve closed for the day. I have things to do. I have to go home. I’m not going to sit out when I have to go to church.’
“That’s how I lost those two jobs. One of them told me, ‘If you’re not willing to go out with me after work, then I can’t work with you.’ I said, ‘Fine,’ and I walked away,” she said.
Seal indicated that her refusal to compromise her beliefs ultimately cost her both roles. Rather than give in, she chose to leave.
Beyond recounting her experience, the gospel musician used the platform to address a broader issue. She cautioned men who attach sexual expectations to employment opportunities, urging them to reconsider the harm such actions cause.
“If a young woman is looking for a job, please don’t do that. What do you gain from it? It doesn’t even happen just once; anytime they feel like it, they ask. I’ve even heard that when the ladies get married and become pregnant, they still demand it.
“Whatever you sow, you will reap. Take it from me, that pain will follow you. And if you, the boss, do not reap it yourself, it will follow your children,” Stella Aba Seal further stated.
