Afua Asantewaa is pushing back against the narrative around her marriage, revealing that her decision to leave came well before the spotlight that followed her sing-a-thon bid.
During a TikTok live session, she addressed the wave of public commentary about her relationship, making it clear that her exit was not driven by fame or the attention that came with her record attempt.
“I left this marriage before the first attempt of singathon,” she said.
She explained that tensions in the marriage had been building long before then, pointing to a dispute over a house they jointly built as a turning point. According to her, the issue came to light after her daughter stumbled upon documents that raised red flags.
“A man I got married to and we built a house together, my first daughter brought out the house document from his car, we realised he had only his name on it. When I confronted him, he told me it was a mistake,” she stated.
That explanation, she suggested, did little to settle her concerns.
Afua also used the moment to call for space to tell her side of the story, saying she has stayed quiet for too long.
“Everyone should let me be because if I don’t wake up tomorrow, no one will speak for me,” she said.
She stressed again that the timeline matters, rejecting suggestions that her rising profile influenced her personal decisions.
“I left the marriage before the singathon, so it has got nothing to do with fame,” she reiterated.
Looking back at the period of the sing-a-thon, she described a disconnect between what played out publicly and what was happening privately. She alleged that her husband’s gestures during the event painted a picture that did not match their reality.
“You knew what you did to me, so, during the singathon, when a flower was brought to me, you knelt to give me the flowers as if you were a lover boy. We fought in the hotel because you knew I was leaving you,” she revealed.
She further disclosed that her father had urged her to delay any formal separation at the time, citing the timing of the event.
“My dad told me that I should be patient and because the singathon was approaching, that’s not the good time to divorce him,” she disclosed.
Now, she says she is done holding back, especially as criticism and online attacks continue.
“I’m not going to shut up anymore. The bullying is too much. My daughter would tell me that I shouldn’t let a man ruin my life, she sees what her father does to me,” Afua Asantewaa further stated.
Afua Asantewaa has finally clarified the circumstances surrounding her separation. She stated that she had already left the marriage before her first sing-a-thon, but her father persuaded her to stay because the event was approaching.
