Denmark Confirm Christian Eriksen Conscious After Scary On-Pitch Incident

Christian Eriksen has been taken to hospital for further medical assessments after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, triggering distressing memories of the cardiac arrest that shocked the football world during Euro 2021.

The incident occurred in the 65th minute at Nature Energy Park in Odense when the Danish midfielder suddenly went down during an off-the-ball moment. Television pictures showed Eriksen clutching his chest with both hands before collapsing onto the pitch.

Moments later, cameras captured the 34-year-old lying on his back as concerned teammates gathered around him. Members of Ukraine’s coaching staff were also seen urgently signaling for medical personnel to enter the field.

As concern spread throughout the stadium, the Danish Football Association moved quickly to reassure supporters. In a statement posted on X, the federation confirmed that Eriksen was conscious and receiving medical attention.

A more detailed update followed shortly afterward, with Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen providing encouraging news about the midfielder’s condition.

“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.

“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.”

Boesen explained that doctors would continue examining Eriksen to establish what had caused the collapse.

Eriksen “will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.”

Providing another update on the player’s condition, Boesen added:

“We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was OK.”

With play unable to resume following the incident, the referee officially abandoned the match in the 79th minute. Denmark were leading 2-1 at the time, and no football had been played after Eriksen went down.

Inside the stadium, anxiety initially silenced the crowd before supporters united in chants of “Eriksen, Eriksen” as medical staff attended to the midfielder, the AP reported.

Following the decision to end the match, players from both sides gathered in a circle with their coaches. After a brief discussion, the teams walked around the pitch to acknowledge supporters, who responded with sustained applause. Several players appeared visibly emotional.

The episode inevitably recalled the frightening scenes from June 2021, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening European Championship match against Finland in Copenhagen. He later received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator after collapsing face-first on the field.

That incident, which stunned the sport, saw Eriksen resuscitated during an extensive on-field medical emergency overseen by Boesen. The midfielder later revealed he had been told he was “gone from this world for five minutes.”

Despite the life-threatening ordeal, Eriksen remarkably returned to professional football 259 days later after signing for Brentford in the Premier League. He subsequently spent three seasons at Manchester United before securing a move to German side Wolfsburg, where he is contracted through the 2026-27 campaign.

Wolfsburg confirmed on X that Eriksen had been transported to Odense University Hospital and said the club was closely monitoring the situation.

“All the best and a speedy recovery, Christian,” Wolfsburg said.

Manchester United also expressed support for their former player.

The club said it was “encouraged by Denmark’s update on Christian Eriksen.”

“The club is sending strength and love to Christian and the Eriksen family as we await further news,” United said.

Neither Denmark nor Ukraine have secured qualification for the World Cup.
