Concerns about the growing influence of churches and religious leaders on marriages have been raised by Reverend Kwaku Agyei Antwi, widely known as Rev Obofour, who believes such involvement may be contributing to the collapse of many unions.
Speaking in a video, the outspoken preacher argued that marriages built around heavy church participation often face greater challenges than those kept away from public scrutiny.
According to Rev Obofour, couples who choose to keep their relationships private, rather than placing them at the centre of church activities or social media discussions, are more likely to remain together.
“Many marriages influenced by the church have broken down, including those involving pastors’ children. Those who kept their marriages private and did not actively involve the church or social media are still intact. Even 90 per cent of them are still together,” he said.
The founder of the church also suggested that many Christians remain trapped in unhappy marriages for years, often enduring difficult circumstances instead of walking away.
Sharing his perspective on marital counselling, Rev Obofour said he would not encourage people to stay in relationships that have become damaging to their well-being. He maintained that some warning signs are often overlooked until situations worsen.
“Do you know that Christians are the only people who can stay in bad marriages until death? If you come to me for counselling, I will tell you to leave a toxic marriage because it can destroy your life.
“My father did the same to my mother, and from my experience, I believe that if a man starts engaging in infidelity, he may not stop until serious consequences arise,” he further stated.
