South Africa Loses Rising Footballer Jayden Adams at 25

Jayden Adams has died aged 25, weeks after representing South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25, only weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The talented midfielder was part of South Africa’s historic World Cup campaign, playing in all three group-stage matches as Bafana Bafana advanced to the knockout rounds for the first time before suffering a round of 32 defeat to co-hosts Canada.

Tributes have poured in from across the football world as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to a BBC report, South African police confirmed they had launched an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. The cause of death has not yet been established.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his grief in a statement.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”

McKenzie also appealed for patience as investigations continue.

“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time.

“Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course.”

Adams’ death comes shortly after an emotionally challenging World Cup campaign. He started South Africa’s 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Group A despite learning only hours before kick-off that his grandmother had died.

The South African Football Players Union described the midfielder’s death as a devastating blow to the sport and the country.

“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction.

“His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, team-mates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large.

“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.”

Adams earned his first senior international cap in 2022 and steadily established himself as one of South Africa’s most promising midfielders. Before his World Cup appearance, he was a member of the national team that reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

At club level, Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before completing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. During his time with the Pretoria-based club, he helped secure league honours as well as the African Champions League title.

His performances under head coach Hugo Broos also earned him a place in the squad that made history by guiding South Africa into the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino joined the growing list of football figures paying tribute to the midfielder.

“It’s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic Fifa World Cup campaign.

“My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at Fifa and the global football community, are with his family, friends and team-mates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.”
