Fella Makafui Explains Why She Only Wants One Child

Fella Makafui

Ghanaian actress and entrepreneur Fella Makafui has opened up about why she has no desire to raise a large family, saying she is content with having just one child because she wants to give her daughter the best life she can afford.

During a TikTok Live session, the actress explained that her decision is rooted in careful planning, financial security and the kind of future she envisions for her daughter, Island, whom she shares with rapper Medikal.

Fella said she believes parenthood comes with the responsibility of being able to meet a child’s needs and create opportunities without constant financial pressure. Using Island as an example, she said she wants to be in a position where she can easily support her daughter’s dreams, whether that means travelling or pursuing new experiences.

“I don’t see the point of having a lot of kids. That’s no shade to anyone who has more than one, but that’s just my preference. One is okay for me. The kind of life I want for my child and myself, I don’t want to give birth for the child to come and suffer. We need to be very much okay. If Island says, ‘Mummy, I want to travel to this place,’ then I get her ticket so she travels,” she said.

Although she is firm in her personal choice, Fella stressed that she is not criticising people who decide to have bigger families. She maintained that every parent should make the decision that best suits their circumstances.

She also encouraged women to avoid rushing into motherhood, urging them to prioritise emotional readiness and financial stability before having children.

According to her, thoughtful planning can help parents build healthier relationships with their children while reducing the frustrations that sometimes spill into public disputes or social media conflicts.

“You need to plan. There’s no rush in life. Relax, make good choices, and make sure you are very okay yourself as a woman before you have a child, so that you don’t come and drag anybody on social media. So you don’t become a bitter mother,” she noted.

Fella went on to explain that her perspective on parenting is deeply personal and shaped by her own upbringing. She recalled growing up with unresolved feelings toward her father because he was absent during her childhood, an experience that continues to influence how she approaches raising her own child.

Despite her past, she spoke warmly about Medikal’s role as a father, commending the rapper for the love and support he gives their daughter.

“That’s how I see life because I grew up hating my dad. I never understood why he never took care of me. Island is a sweet soul, and her dad is very amazing,” Fella Makafui further stated.
