Ghanaian artiste Fameye says he has reached a point in his life where protecting his own peace matters more than taking responsibility for problems that belong to other people.
Speaking in an interview with Kobby Kyei, the ‘Notin I Get’ composer reflected on how his outlook has changed over the years, particularly his decision to set clearer boundaries and become more deliberate about where he invests his energy.
Fameye admitted that he once had a habit of carrying other people’s burdens, but said experience has taught him that constantly putting others first can come at a personal cost.
“The pressure I have in life is not from people’s burden. I used to be like that, but now, people’s problems are not mine. I’m growing and I’ve learnt to say no. Learn how to say no to people,” he said.
For the musician, recognising what is causing a person to struggle is an important step towards changing their circumstances. He urged people who understand the source of their problems to take action rather than remaining trapped in situations that continue to affect them.
“When you’re going through something and you know the cause of it, just move away, stay disciplined and concentrate on yourself. You’re more important in this life than anyone else,” he stated.
Fameye also challenged the idea that people must make extreme sacrifices for others, stressing that life continues even after someone who has made such sacrifices is gone.
“When you’re no longer there, people will move on,” Fameye indicated.
His comments also extended to people who make sacrifices on his behalf. Rather than expecting those around him to put their safety or wellbeing on the line for him, Fameye said he makes a conscious effort to check whether they are comfortable with what they are doing.
“If someone is doing something for me, I constantly ask the person if they’re okay doing it for me because if they die trying for me, I will replace you. The crazy thing is, you can get a replacement who is better than the one who died,” he shared.
The musician’s changing outlook has also influenced how he chooses to spend his money and free time.
Fameye said he now places greater value on creating memories with his wife, children and close friends instead of allowing financial pressures and life’s demands to consume his attention.
“These days, when I get some money, I take my wife and children out to have fun. Sometimes, I go out with my close friends. In life, you have to enjoy and make sure you enjoy yourself with the people you love and those who love you,” he further stated.
