Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Stephen Kwabena Boateng, widely known as Kwabena Kesse or Kessben, has died at the age of 68.
The founder of the Kessben Group reportedly passed away after battling an illness.
Kessben was one of Ghana’s notable entrepreneurs, building a business empire with interests across media, education, hospitality, transport and financial services over several decades.
His entrepreneurial journey began in Kumasi, where he grew up in North Suntreso. Born on September 12, 1957, he went on to spend more than 30 years developing and overseeing a range of business ventures.
Through the Kessben Group, he established several companies and institutions, including Kessben Travel and Tours, Kessben Driving School, Kessben Computer School, Kessben Shipping and Forwarding Ltd., Fosua Hotel and Conference Centre, Kessben University College, Kessben Consult and the Kessben Foundation.
His footprint in Ghana’s media landscape was also significant. Kessben FM Limited operated Kessben FM, Kessben TV and Aseda TV, giving the businessman a strong presence in the broadcast industry.
Outside the media space, Kessben held majority shares in Multi Credit Savings and Loans Ltd., further expanding his interests into Ghana’s financial sector.
His public service extended beyond business. Between 2004 and 2010, he served as a member of the National Peace Council, contributing to efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability in the country.
Kessben was also recognised for his philanthropic work and support for community development initiatives.
His death brings to an end the life of an entrepreneur whose name became closely associated with business, media and philanthropy in Ghana.
