Counsellor George Lutterodt has sparked a fresh debate about motherhood, age and child development after making controversial claims about the effect of a woman’s age at childbirth on her child’s intelligence.
The Ghanaian relationship counsellor made the remarks during an interview on Hitz FM on September 1, 2026, while discussing childbirth and the decisions young women make about starting families.
Lutterodt argued that women in their twenties should not unnecessarily postpone having children, claiming that children born during this period tend to have stronger intellectual abilities.
“If you’re a young lady who thinks that you want to have a child, it’s better. Children who are born early, if your mother gives birth to you within the twenties, you’re more intelligent even if you don’t go to school,” he said.
He went further to draw a sharp distinction between childbirth in a woman’s twenties and childbirth at a much later age.
According to him, children born to mothers aged 38 and above could encounter challenges with learning and mental development.
“If they give birth to you from 38 plus, your mind will be dull and it won’t be easy for you when learning,” he stated.
Lutterodt did not present the claim as merely his personal observation. He insisted that there was clinical evidence backing his position.
“It’s clinically proven,” he shared.
His comments also shifted from the question of maternal age to the issue of relationships and the pressure on young women to find the ideal partner before becoming mothers.
Lutterodt questioned why a young woman who wants to have children should continue waiting for a partner she considers perfect.
“You’re young, and you won’t give birth; what’s your problem?” he asked.
He also criticised the popular notion of a “Mr Right”, suggesting that religious teachings may be encouraging some women to delay starting families while waiting for an ideal relationship.
“There’s no Mr Right anywhere; the church is lying to you,” Counsellor Lutterodt further stated.
