‘This Is A Decision I’ll Leave For The Federation’ – Queiroz On His Future

Carlos Queiroz

Carlos Queiroz has left the decision over his future with the Ghana Football Association after admitting he would be ready to resign if his departure could help resolve the country’s football problems.

The Ghana head coach made the admission following the Black Stars’ painful 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, a result that leaves the team facing an uphill battle in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ghana looked to be heading for a much-needed victory after building a two-goal lead, but their advantage quickly disappeared as The Gambia mounted a stunning comeback to claim all three points.

The defeat marked Ghana’s second straight loss in Group C and left the Black Stars without a point from their opening two matches.

The latest setback has intensified scrutiny on Queiroz, who returned for a second spell in charge with the task of guiding Ghana back to the AFCON after the team failed to qualify for the 2025 edition.

With questions now being raised about his position, Queiroz was asked whether he would consider stepping down following another disappointing result.

The Portuguese coach made it clear that he would not resist such a decision if the Ghana FA believes his resignation could help address the problems surrounding the national team.

“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation,” Queiroz said at his post-match press conference.

His comments came after another difficult night for the Black Stars, who had already suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening qualifier in Bouaké.

Ghana now sit at the bottom of Group C with no points from two matches, putting added importance on their remaining fixtures.

The Black Stars will have to produce a significant turnaround in their qualifying campaign if they are to recover from the poor start and keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 AFCON alive.
