Ghanaian socialite Efia Odo has taken aim at Ghana’s two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over what she describes as their failure to deal decisively with illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Efia Odo questioned how Ghana’s political leaders could remain unaware of the severe damage illegal mining is causing to the country’s water bodies, arguing that the destruction has become too obvious to ignore.
In a post on her X page, she said both the NDC and NPP had failed Ghanaians over the years despite repeatedly making commitments to fight the menace.
“There’s no way our leaders are blind to the damage galamsey is doing to our water bodies. In my view, both the NDC and NPP have failed us for years,” she wrote.
According to Efia Odo, the problem is not a lack of political promises. She said successive governments have repeatedly made the fight against illegal mining a campaign issue, only for the sense of urgency to fade after elections.
She questioned why governments that have publicly acknowledged the devastating effects of galamsey have struggled to respond with measures that match the scale of the problem.
“They campaign on promises to fight galamsey, yet once in power, the urgency disappears. If they can see the destruction, why does their response never match the scale of the crisis?” Efia Odo asked.
