John Boadu has secured the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Chairmanship after defeating two former national chairmen and a former Energy Minister in a closely fought contest at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi.
The former NPP General Secretary reportedly polled 2,888 votes to win the election held on Saturday, October 3, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
He finished ahead of former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, who obtained 2,048 votes, while former National Chairman Paul Afoko placed third with 490 votes.
The announcement of the results triggered celebrations among Mr Boadu’s supporters at the congress grounds, with party members expressing excitement over his victory.
Mr Boadu was among four candidates who entered the race for the chairmanship. The other contenders were Mr Afoko, Mr Agyarko and former Greater Accra Regional Chairman Sammy Crabbe.
His victory was boosted by a last-minute alliance with Mr Crabbe, who announced on Saturday that he was backing Mr Boadu and called on his supporters to vote for him.
The chairmanship election was part of the NPP’s broader exercise to elect nine national officers during the conference, which attracted more than 7,000 delegates.
Delegates also considered and approved proposed amendments to the party’s constitution, including changes concerning the position of party leader when the NPP is in opposition.
Mr Boadu, 56, previously served as the NPP’s General Secretary from 2018 to 2022. His return to the party’s national leadership comes at a critical point as the NPP works to reorganise its structures and reposition itself ahead of the 2028 general elections.
As National Chairman, he is expected to be central to the party’s efforts to rebuild its grassroots structures, strengthen its organisation and chart a path back to power.
