Fameye Reveals The Real Inspiration Behind His Hit Song ‘Gen Z’

Fameye

Fameye says his hit song “Gen Z” was not the product of a carefully planned concept or a particular life experience. Instead, the Ghanaian musician found his inspiration by simply paying attention to the people around him.

The singer explained that his familiarity with Gen Z friends gave him enough insight into their lifestyle, personality and everyday behaviour to create the record.

Speaking on YFM, Fameye said he did not have to look far for material because he was already familiar with the generation the song celebrates.

“I have Gen Z friends, I know how the Gen Zs move is, and I know how their character is like, so I just tapped in,” he said.

His explanation comes amid the different meanings listeners have attached to the song since its release. While some may have assumed that the record was built around a particular message or experience, Fameye said there was no hidden story waiting to be uncovered.

The musician said he had even found himself giving different explanations about the song in previous interviews because there was no single event or special motivation behind its creation.

“I said on TV that I don’t really have any special motivation for this song, so I might end up saying different things on any platform I get on, but I think the honest thing is my Gen Z friends,” he stated.

For Fameye, the song was therefore less about creating a detailed commentary on Gen Z and more about capturing an energy he had encountered through his friendships.

Producer Cooks became an important part of turning that idea into a finished record. Fameye described Cooks as a Gen Z, making his contribution particularly relevant to a song built around the lifestyle and character of the younger generation.

The production also took an unexpected turn following Fameye’s trip to South Africa.

The musician travelled there with his DJ and encountered the strong presence of Amapiano in the country’s music and social culture. His DJ believed the experience could influence the direction of “Gen Z” and recommended adding elements of the South African sound to the track.

“We travelled to South Africa. You know how South Africans love Amapiano, and they chill a lot. So I went there with my DJ, and he told me I should call Cooks and tell him to add some Amapiano touch so that it can sound a little bit like Amapiano, not just the Afro sound,” the Ghanaian artiste further stated.
