Chairman Wontumi’s Bail Ruling Set for November 4

Chairman Wontumi

The Accra High Court will rule on November 4, 2026, on whether former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, should be granted bail while he challenges his conviction and 20-year prison sentence.

Mr Boasiako is seeking temporary release from custody as his legal team pursues an appeal against his conviction for illegal mining-related offences connected to a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.

His lawyers want him released on bail until the appeal process is concluded, but the application faces opposition from the Attorney-General, who has argued that the former NPP regional chairman poses a flight risk.

The bail application was initially scheduled for hearing on August 19, according to Myjoyonline. However, proceedings were adjourned after Mr Boasiako and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, failed to appear before the court.

The matter was subsequently rescheduled to October 15, with the court now setting November 4 as the date for its ruling.

The decision will determine whether Mr Boasiako remains in custody throughout the appeal process or is permitted to leave prison on bail while challenging his conviction and sentence.

The court is expected to weigh the arguments presented by both sides before deciding whether the circumstances justify granting him bail pending the determination of his appeal.
