Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah

Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has died in Cairo, Egypt, following a prolonged illness.

The Nkrumah family announced his death in a statement, disclosing that he passed away peacefully while receiving care in the Egyptian capital.

Gamal had been staying at a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke. The family expressed gratitude to the medical professionals and caregivers who supported him throughout his illness.

A respected journalist, writer and intellectual, Gamal was known for his engagement with political, social and cultural issues affecting Africa and the wider world.

According to the family, he remained committed to justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity throughout his life.

The statement described him as a man of “profound intellectual curiosity, independence of thought and quiet conviction”, noting that he carried forward his father’s legacy in his own distinctive way while building a reputation based on his personal principles and achievements.

His death, the family said, represents a significant loss to relatives, friends, colleagues and readers who valued his insight and contributions.

The family also acknowledged the support received from the governments and people of Ghana and Egypt during his illness, expressing appreciation for their assistance.

Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, led the country to independence from British colonial rule in 1957 and became a prominent advocate of Pan-Africanism and African unity.

While Gamal was closely associated with that historical legacy, the family emphasised his independent identity and achievements as a journalist and intellectual.

The family has requested privacy as it mourns the loss and said details of memorial arrangements and opportunities to pay tribute to his life would be announced in due course.

The statement concluded with a prayer for his eternal peace.
