Morocco Defeat Argentina to Lift First-Ever U-20 World Cup Trophy

Morocco wins FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025 after defeating Argentina

Morocco have made football history, defeating six-time champions Argentina 2-0 to win their first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup. The stunning victory came Sunday night at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile, marking the first time an Arab nation has lifted a FIFA men’s World Cup trophy and only the second time an African country has done so, after Ghana’s triumph in 2009.

The Atlas Cubs displayed a masterclass in tactical discipline and composure against a star-studded Argentine side that had been heavily favoured to win the tournament. Morocco’s Yassir Zabiri was the hero of the night, scoring both goals within the first half-hour to seal the victory.

Zabiri opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a stunning curling free kick that sailed past Argentina’s goalkeeper. Just 17 minutes later, he doubled the lead after a clever through-ball from Othman Maamma. Despite Argentina’s desperate attempts to get back into the game, Morocco’s defence, led by captain Amine El Karti, stood firm until the final whistle.

The victory capped a remarkable campaign for Morocco. The young North Africans had topped a so-called “Group of Death” featuring Spain, Brazil and Mexico, before eliminating South Korea and the United States in the knockout rounds. Their semifinal victory over France, decided on penalties, set up the dramatic final showdown in Santiago.

This triumph represents Morocco’s best-ever finish in the competition; their previous best came in 2005 when they finished fourth. It also reinforces Morocco’s growing influence in global football, following their senior team’s historic semifinal run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Football analysts hailed Morocco’s victory as a breakthrough moment for African football development. “It’s a dream come true for Moroccan youth football and a proud day for the continent,” said CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

On the part of Argentina, the defeat marked their second-ever loss in a U-20 World Cup final and a sobering reminder that their dominance at the youth level is no longer guaranteed.

Morocco’s success is already being seen as a major boost for the nation’s football development pipeline, potentially feeding fresh talent into the senior team that continues to impress on the world stage.

Morocco’s U-20 triumph will be celebrated as one of the greatest moments in the country’s sporting history, a night when the Atlas Cubs roared loudest on football’s biggest youth stage.
