“I Went to Music School to Learn How to Use My Voice” – Wendy Shay Discloses

Before stepping into the spotlight as a mainstream artiste, Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay says she invested years in formal music education to sharpen her talent and understand the technical side of singing.

In an interview with Kafui Dey, the singer opened up about the training she underwent before pursuing music professionally. According to her, attending music school helped her gain control over her voice and improve her vocal delivery.

“I went to music school to learn how to use my diaphragm and my voice. You can have a beautiful voice, but if you don’t know how to use it, you won’t sound as you’re supposed to,” she said.

The singer disclosed that she spent four and a half years studying music, a period during which she also learned how to play instruments.

“I spent four and a half years in school and I learnt how to play instruments. For now, I play the piano, but I think I actually got more into it recently,” she stated.

Reflecting on her move to Ghana, Wendy Shay explained that her focus shifted once she entered the local music scene. She said the demands of trying to establish herself influenced the kind of music she made and gradually pulled her away from parts of herself she once connected with.

“When I came to Ghana, I had to break the market. I had to do a certain sound and with everything that I was going through, I got disconnected from that side of me,” she stated.

She further admitted that the challenges she encountered within the industry affected both her personal life and artistic identity.

“I was dealing with a whole lot of things, but I think I’m now returning to the old me,” Wendy Shay divulged.
