“I Never Really Experienced That Emotional Father Love” – Wendy Shay Opens Up on Her Childhood

Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay has reflected on her upbringing and personal journey, opening up about how the early loss of her father shaped her emotional world and sense of independence.

She explained that her father died when she was just two years old, leaving her with no direct memories of him. Still, she believes that absence played a quiet but lasting role in the person she has become.

“I never really experienced that emotional father love,” she told Kafui Dey.

Wendy Shay said growing up without a father figure influenced how she connects with people emotionally, especially when it comes to depending on men.

“I had to learn how to allow myself to be helped,” she stated.

She also pointed out that her childhood environment was largely shaped by strong, independent women, something she credits for her drive and resilience in the music industry.

Despite her public presence, she admitted her private life is quite reserved. She rarely keeps close friendships and is most comfortable on her own.

“Till now, I don’t really have friends,” she revealed.

For her, solitude is not loneliness but a natural state. She described herself as someone guided more by purpose than by social connections.

“I see myself as an eagle, and eagles fly alone,” she said.

Still, she noted that she enjoys moments of fun, but has become more selective about the people she lets into her personal space.

“I choose people purposefully now,” she explained.

Wendy Shay also revisited her early years in Ghana before moving to Germany, recalling a childhood spent living with her aunt and uncle alongside her cousins while her mother worked abroad.

She said that experience helped her understand family unity and strengthened her appreciation for togetherness.

Although she is often seen as energetic and outgoing on stage, she described herself as naturally introverted.

“I like my own company. I can stay indoors for a week.”

Wendy Shay further shared that being the first child in her family has influenced her approach to leadership, saying she prefers guiding by example rather than imposing authority.
