Ghanaian musician Fameye has spoken candidly about the pain of growing up and facing life without the presence of his parents, saying their absence remains one of the deepest wounds he continues to carry.
The musician said some of his most difficult experiences have been made even harder by having no parent to turn to for comfort, guidance or public support when he finds himself at the centre of controversy.
Speaking with Kobby Kyei, Fameye reflected on a particularly troubling period when he was involved in an issue with someone in the entertainment industry and faced claims that he had been cursed and taken to places against his will.
He said moments like that often make him wish he had parents who could publicly stand up for him, just as he has seen other families rally around their children when they are facing criticism or difficult situations.
“We see parents fighting for their children online all the time. Some people think it’s not good, but some of us also want that. I wish when an issue about me comes up, a parent would come online and talk for me,” he said.
According to Fameye, he has become accustomed to carrying his burdens privately, even when the pressure becomes too much for him emotionally.
“Have you ever seen any family members of mine do that before? No one. I always have to hustle and do everything by myself behind the scenes and I cry,” he added.
The “Nothing I Get” hitmaker also pointed to the birth of his first child as one of the periods when the absence of his parents felt particularly painful.
Rather than having a mother or father around to share the responsibility of caring for his newborn, Fameye said he and his partner had to manage everything on their own.
“Another darkest time was when my first child was born. Where was my mum? Where was my dad who would also come and take care of my baby? I was doing it myself. I did everything with my woman, just us two,” Fameye said.
For Fameye, the pain is not limited to the support he wishes he had received. He also longs for the opportunity to experience the other side of parenthood by being able to provide for his own parents.
He said that even after making significant amounts of money from shows, there are times when he wishes a parent could call him to ask for financial assistance so he could have the satisfaction of giving back.
“Even now I can go for shows and make so much money, and I will only wish there’s a parent who calls me and says, ‘My son, I need money,’ so I can just send some to her,” he said.
Despite building a successful music career and becoming a father himself, Fameye said the absence of his parents remains a reality he has had to learn to live with.
He acknowledged that the memories and unanswered questions still weigh on him, even though he knows there is little he can do to alter the circumstances.
“All these things bother me, but I can’t do anything about them,” Fameye further stated.
