“I Was Homeless in London, Sleeping in Cars” – Sonnie Badu Opens Up on Life Before “Baba” Hit

Ghanaian gospel singer Sonnie Badu has opened up about a difficult chapter in his life, revealing that the success of his popular song “Baba” came at a time when he was struggling with homelessness in the United Kingdom.

Speaking in a recent interview with Bola Ray on Starr FM, he reflected on how uncertain life was before his breakthrough.

According to him, the period leading up to the release of songs like “Open the Floodgates” and “Baba” was marked by hardship, including nights spent sleeping in cars while he sought divine intervention for a turning point.

“When I came up with ‘Open the Floodgates’, I was at a point where [I said] God, you’ve got to do something. In London, I was homeless. I was sleeping in cars. I asked God for one song,” he said.

Beyond his personal struggles, Sonnie Badu also highlighted the wider impact of “Baba,” noting how the song continues to resonate with listeners who connect deeply to its message and emotional depth.

“I love spending time in God’s presence, and as Phil said, everybody has a story behind their songs. When you’re going through the process, you don’t realise that you’re doing it for so many people.

“The spirit that inspires a song stands in the gap for others who can relate to what you’re going through. That grateful spirit you express makes people connect with it because they feel the same way,” sonnie Badu stated.
