Rather than placing all the blame on heavy rainfall, Keche Andrew says residents must also accept responsibility for the flooding that continues to affect many parts of Accra.
Speaking in a video posted on TikTok, the musician humorously suggested he wanted to visit a police station to find out whether ordinary citizens could be legally licensed to help enforce proper sanitation by confronting people who litter indiscriminately.
“I want to go to the police stations and ask if they can give a license to beat someone, because at this point we all have to be self-police to stop the flood,” he said.
Expanding on the joke, Keche Andrew said anyone caught dumping refuse into gutters, drains, or water bodies should be stopped, punished, and then handed over to the police as a warning to others.
“When you see anyone dump refuse in gutters, in cars, or into water bodies, we catch them and beat them up. Afterwards, you take them to the police station, that’s what we need to do,” he said.
Behind the lighthearted delivery, the musician argued that the city’s flooding crisis cannot be blamed on rainfall alone. He insisted that careless waste disposal has become a major contributor to blocked drains and overflowing waterways.
He expressed frustration with people who casually throw rubbish into public drains and gutters, saying such actions leave the city’s drainage system clogged whenever heavy rains arrive.
Keche Andrew also criticized residents who wait until it begins to rain before disposing of household waste into fast-moving water, believing the current will wash it away. According to him, that habit only worsens the blockage of drainage channels and increases the risk of flooding across the capital.
“Our attitudes are part of the recent floods; we dump refuse anywhere,” he stressed.
