“They Didn’t Expect Me to Be Secular” – Sista Afia Speaks on Family Pressure

Sista Afia

Born into the well-known Duncan Williams family, a household closely tied to ministry work in Ghana, Sista Afia says her decision to go into secular music was never something her relatives anticipated.

In an interview with Kumasi-based Angel FM, she explained that her upbringing was deeply rooted in Christianity, with most of her family members committed to church life. That background, she noted, shaped their expectation that she would naturally gravitate toward gospel music instead of a secular career.

“My family loves God. We were all brought up in the church, so they didn’t expect I would be a secular artiste. They expected me to be more of a gospel artiste,” she said.

She also addressed questions about whether prominent preacher Bishop Duncan-Williams had ever reached out to her over her music. According to her, that has never happened.

She further explained that each member of the family is focused on their own individual path. She pointed to her cousin Daniel, known in music circles as Deewills and the son of Bishop Duncan-Williams, who is also carving out a career as a rapper.

“No, everybody is doing their thing. Daniel is doing his stuff, then how much more me? I have never hidden it that I’m part of the Duncan Williams family. I just don’t like to talk about it that much,” Sista Afia stated.
