Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu has urged the government to deny a renewal of Gold Fields’ mining lease for the Tarkwa concession, arguing that Ghana should take a firmer stance in response to reported xenophobic attacks against Ghanaians in South Africa.
Speaking in a video posted on social media, the actor linked his appeal to the treatment of Ghanaians living in South Africa. He maintained that although Ghanaians cannot respond by targeting South African citizens residing in Ghana, the country has other means of expressing its displeasure.
According to him, one such measure would be to reconsider the continued operations of Gold Fields, which is headquartered in South Africa.
Kwaku Manu further argued that Ghana is increasingly capable of managing its own mineral resources without relying heavily on foreign mining firms. He cited the work of Ibrahim Mahama’s E&P as evidence that local companies can successfully operate in the sector and called for greater support for indigenous investors interested in mining.
“President Mahama, please do not renew Gold Fields’ mining lease. As Ghanaians, we cannot attack them or tell South African nationals to go back to their country. But we have now reached a point where we can also mine our gold ourselves, just as Ibrahim Mahama is already doing,” he said.
The actor also commended Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, praising what he described as the minister’s commitment to assisting Ghanaians facing challenges outside the country.
His remarks come as Ghana continues to receive citizens returning from South Africa amid concerns over a possible resurgence of xenophobic violence.
On May 27, 2026, a repatriation flight carrying close to 300 Ghanaians arrived in the country from South Africa. Authorities expect additional arrivals in the days ahead, with reports indicating that approximately 800 Ghanaians have registered to be repatriated.
