Nine suspects have been arrested after a violent robbery at Fiapre-Zongo in the Bono Region left two people dead and three others injured.
The attack, which took place on the evening of Thursday, August 5, 2026, was directed at a mobile money vendor and has renewed concerns over the growing security risks faced by operators in the sector.
The Bono Regional Police Command said the suspects were arrested after intelligence gathered from the incident prompted officers to alert the Twumasikrom checkpoint to monitor vehicles carrying cattle along the Berekum route.
According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, police received a distress call around 8:00 p.m. that an armed robbery was in progress at Fiapre.
Officers were dispatched immediately, but the attackers had already left the area by the time the police arrived.
The robbery targeted 30-year-old mobile money vendor Amina Abu, who was reportedly dispossessed of GH₵30,000 in cash.
Gunfire during the attack also left Amina Abu, Khadija Abu, 23, Anifa Tanko, 24, and Ibrahim Osei, 40, injured after they were struck by pellets.
Police later found an unidentified man behind Ibrahim Osei’s residence with serious injuries. A black mask was discovered beside him, leading investigators to suspect that he may have been connected to the robbery.
The five injured persons were taken to the Sunyani Regional Teaching Hospital for treatment. Ibrahim Osei, however, was pronounced dead on arrival, while the unidentified man died while receiving medical attention.
At the crime scene, investigators recovered six spent BB cartridge casings, which have been preserved as exhibits for forensic examination.
Preliminary police findings indicate that the suspected robbers may have travelled on a cattle truck heading towards Berekum before getting off and launching the attack.
Acting on intelligence gathered after the incident, police contacted personnel at the Twumasikrom checkpoint to intercept vehicles transporting cattle along the route. The operation resulted in the arrest of nine suspects, who are now assisting investigators with the case.
The police said the suspects would be processed and sent before the court after investigations are completed.
The remains of the two deceased persons have been deposited at the hospital morgue pending preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Bono Regional Police Command has also intensified efforts to locate other suspects believed to be at large.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring that all persons involved in this heinous crime are arrested and made to face the full rigours of the law,” the statement emphasized.
The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the security challenges confronting mobile money vendors, who remain vulnerable to robbery attacks because of the cash they routinely handle.
