NDC Has No Power To Reject Ministerial Nominees – Sam George
Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Sam George says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has no power or capacity to reject the ministerial appointees appearing before the Appointment Committee of Parliament.
Explaining during his submission on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, the NDC legislator indicated that the standing orders of Parliament allow a fair vote by the committee and MPs on the Minority caucus cannot reject the nominees.
According to Sam George, narrations in the media the NDC MPS will outrightly reject the ministerial nominees could fuel attacks on the Minority caucus, especially those on the committee in the coming days.
“The way the media has presented this matter, if we are not careful it would lead to a certain unfortunate attack on the Minority caucus in the next few days,” he told Randy Abbey.
He added that the implication is being developed that the NDC would reject the nominees at the committee. However, the NDC lacks the authority to do so.
“The impression is being created that the NDC would reject the nominees at the committee, The NDC doesn’t have the power to do that,” he said.
The Ningo Prampram MP said the Minority caucus will oppose the approval of the ministerial nominees but only when it comes to the floor of Parliament.
The National Democratic Congress has directed the Minority caucus in Parliament NOT to approve any of the new ministerial nominees appointed by President Akufo-Addo.
In a statement signed by the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, on Sunday, February 19, 2023, the party expressed concern over the large size of the current government and urged its Members of Parliament to reject the nominees.
“The leadership of the NDC, has, against this backdrop, directed the Minority caucus in Parliament NOT to approve any of the new ministerial nominees and to further push for a reduction in the size of government with a view to reducing the needless drain on scarce public resources, excerpts of the statement read.
According to the party, despite the numerous appeals, President Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration has remained adamant and tone-deaf.
