A considerable number of Ghanaians are currently being detained in different prisons throughout Libya.
Calls are being made for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to step in and take action to facilitate the repatriation of these individuals back to Ghana.
Henry Yeboah, originally from Dormaa Ahenkro in the Bono Region and presently residing at Bani Walid in Libya, has a personal connection to the situation, as his brother is among those held in prison.
Over the years many Ghanaians and other African nationals have used Libya as a transit to get to Europe. Since 2017, the International Organisation for Migration(IOM) has assisted more than 1,500 Ghanaians with their voluntary return home.
He highlighted the treatment experienced by Ghanaians and other African nationals in various Libyan prisons.
“Our brothers are going through many challenges, the food they are being serve is not the best, sleep conditions in the prisons are also bad,”
Yeboah is thus urging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to collaborate with their Libyan counterparts to ensure the safe return of these Ghanaians.
“Many Ghanaians are locked up in various prisons across Libya, my brother is part of them. I am urging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by Sherry Ayoko Botchway, to collaborate with the Libyan authorities so that they can release them to come home.”
Yeboah noted that some countries have come for their citizens.
“Countries like Nigeria, Mali, Guinea have come for their citizens who were in various prisons in this country.”
