Court Defers Empress Gifty’s GH₵20M Defamation Suit Against Agradaa Amid Jurisdiction Dispute

Empress Gifty and Nana Agradaa

A high-profile defamation case filed by gospel singer Empress Gifty Adorye against jailed Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has been adjourned to October 10, 2025, due to fresh legal filings.

On Wednesday, July 16, Justice Janet Anima Maafo of the Tema High Court suspended proceedings after Agradaa’s lawyers submitted an application to amend her legal appearance details. They argued that her current status as an inmate at Nsawam Prison has altered her official residence, necessitating jurisdictional adjustments.

Agradaa, who is serving a 15-year sentence, was not present in court. Her husband, Angel Asiamah, appeared on her behalf.

The suit, initially filed in May 2025, stems from Empress Gifty’s claim that Agradaa defamed her through damaging allegations on social media. The gospel artist is demanding GH₵20 million in compensation for the alleged harm to her reputation.

Outside the courtroom, Agradaa’s legal representatives told reporters that procedural law bars trials in jurisdictions not aligned with a defendant’s permanent residence, prompting their request to transfer the case to the Eastern Region for logistical ease.

Empress Gifty’s attorneys acknowledged the application but expressed skepticism about its motive.

“The application presented by Agradaa’s lawyers was a deliberate process to delay the trial,” one lawyer asserted, accusing the defense of intentionally stalling the case.

Despite objections, the court permitted Agradaa’s legal team to present their motion during the next session.

“He added, however, that the court had given the defendant the opportunity to move her application on the adjourned date,” the Ghana News Agency reported.

Gifty’s legal team plans to challenge the proposed venue change, maintaining that the Tema High Court remains the appropriate forum for the case.
