“An Industry Not Worth Fighting For” – Gloria Sarfo Defends Herself After Industry Critique Sparks Backlash

After igniting controversy with remarks about the state of Ghana’s movie industry, actress Gloria Sarfo has returned to the spotlight, this time, to clarify her stance and respond to her critics.

Her original comments, posted to Instagram on July 15, 2025, lamented the stagnation of the movie industry and its failure to provide work or nurture creative talent. She argued that many gifted individuals were being sidelined simply because, in her words, “there is no work going on.”

That post struck a nerve.

While some praised her honesty, others within the entertainment landscape accused her of seeking attention. Detractors questioned her contributions to the industry, claiming she hadn’t done much beyond acting in roles offered to her. The criticism gained momentum on social media and mainstream platforms, where personalities challenged her credibility and motives.

Refusing to stay silent, Sarfo addressed the backlash on July 20 with a second Instagram statement, passionately defending her intent.

“God knows I didn’t post that for clout chasing!! God knows I didn’t intend to demean anyone or my country!! God knows that I didn’t post that, because I was just excited to be filming in Nigeria (because this is not my first time)!! God knows that I had good intentions with that post!! He knows that I wasn’t trying to be selfish!!” she wrote.

She pointed out that those criticizing her were well aware of her longstanding support for the industry.

“Meanwhile, they also know that I am not boastful!! They know, that I have always fought and championed this course, even without them!! Yet, a few of those who are directly affected, came under my post to type HMMMMMMMM. Even the young ones I was intentionally fighting for, also came to express their ignorance and disrespect me!!”

Beyond the online responses, Sarfo took issue with how pundits on TV and radio programs mocked her personally instead of engaging with the substance of her critique.

“And pundits sit on national television/radio to insult and demean my personality and brand!! So, I’ll borrow their word, hmmmmmmmm & let’s all pretend that it is all rosy publicly, and cry privately!! Let’s continue to pretend like we don’t know the truth!! Yes, we have a perfect industry, one that is solid, no talent is being wasted, producers treat actors very well, and pay them good!! Ghanaian actors are the happiest actors in the world!! Ghanaian filmmakers produce 1000 movies every year!!”

Sarfo ended her post with a clear message: she is stepping back from industry advocacy and shifting her focus inward, prioritizing her personal brand, a decision she says loved ones have long advised her to take.

“Until then, I wish everyone all the best. ‘Momma yEn nk) so aa, nnunu yEn ho, na yEn sere.’ Indeed, an industry not worth fighting for!! I rest my case!! Like my loved ones will say, Gloria focus on your brand. (I guess it’s about time!!) NB: this is not for pity,” Gloria Sarfo concluded.
