Ghana Bids Farewell to Final Six Victims of August 6 Helicopter Crash

The last six victims of Ghana’s August 6 helicopter crash were buried with military honours in Accra, as President Mahama announced posthumous promotions and support for their families.

Ghana has laid to rest the final six victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, concluding a week of national mourning marked by tributes, prayers, and military honours.

The burial took place on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo, Greater Accra Region. Government officials, top military commanders, grieving relatives, and mourners from across the country gathered to pay their respects.

Before the interments, an interfaith service was held at Black Star Square, where families and loved ones placed wreaths in memory of the fallen. The solemn occasion was filled with emotion as tears flowed freely during the final salute.

Those laid to rest were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

President John Mahama, in his tribute, announced the creation of a Support Fund for the children of the deceased and revealed that officers from the Ghana Armed Forces who perished in the crash would receive posthumous promotions.

He said the Chief of Defence Staff will present the promotion insignias to the families, noting: “These posthumous promotions are not just symbolic gestures but represent the rightful place these officers have earned in the country’s effort to honour them.”

The promotions elevate Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala to Wing Commander, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu to Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah to Flight Sergeant. President Mahama also assured that benefits for their families will reflect the new ranks.

Two other victims, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, were buried on August 10.
