Veteran Ghanaian highlife musician, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, has singled out Kofi Kinaata as the artiste best positioned to safeguard and elevate the genre’s future.
During a discussion on Joy Prime, Ambolley highlighted Kinaata’s character as much as his music, pointing to the singer’s humility and thoughtful approach as signs of lasting greatness.
“The next person that’s going to make it happen is Kofi Kinaata. He is sensible in the music and he’s someone who is humble,” Ambolley declared.
He recounted how a particular track Kinaata shared with him left a lasting impression. “The second record that he released, he made me to go and listen to it and I was very happy,” he added.
Ambolley indicated that what sets Kinaata apart is his ability to remain rooted in Highlife while still experimenting with new layers.
“The direction he wants to go, he’s stepping out, he’s trying to stick to his highlife identity and he’s adding more to it. This makes me know that he’s musically inclined to be able to do that,” he explained.
Concluding his endorsement, the veteran musician suggested the genre’s torch is ready to be handed over. “So we have to pass on the baton and he’s the one who’s going to hold it and do it. I’ve been watching him and I think he’s the next,” Ambolley said.
