Ghanaian singer Sista Afia has opened up about a disturbing encounter with a fan who touched her inappropriately moments before she took the stage.
Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, Afia revealed that she finds it extremely uncomfortable when fans attempt to touch her during performances.
“I hate it when people like to touch me when I’m going on stage, especially the fans, and it’s something that I don’t like at all. It’s very uncomfortable for me. When they press me, I don’t like that press. One time, somebody pressed me so hard, and I hit him with a mic. The person had to go to the hospital,” she said.
According to Sista Afia, the incident happened during one of her shows when a fan pressed her “front part” so forcefully that she instinctively struck the individual with her microphone, resulting in injuries that required medical attention.
She noted that even though security personnel were present, her immediate reaction was one of self-defense because of how violated she felt in that moment.
“My first instinct was to react immediately. Sometimes, you have to go through the crowd to reach the stage, especially when the event isn’t well organised. So, when the guy did that, my first instinct was to find out who it was, and I hit him with the mic so hard,” she added.
The ‘Weather’ singer emphasized that such encounters often occur at poorly managed events where performers must pass through the crowd to access the stage.
“I may never be a favourite in the music industry despite all my efforts,” Sista Afia said, reflecting on how incidents like these affect her experience as a performer.
