Shatta Wale urges President John Mahama to reform Ghana’s music industry

Popular Ghanaian dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah, widely known as Shatta Wale, has penned an open letter to Ghana’s newly sworn-in president, John Dramani Mahama, calling for transformative changes in the nation’s music industry.

In a social media post, the leader of the Shatta Movement expressed his desire for reforms that would attract seasoned professionals to Ghana’s radio and television sectors, ultimately uplifting the entertainment landscape.

Shatta Wale, the creator of the hit song ‘On God’, underscored the urgent need for change in the industry to ensure a brighter future for upcoming artists. He highlighted the challenges many musicians face and advocated for a system that treats music as a serious profession rather than just a hobby.

His message read: “Letter to our new President of Ghana
I wish our new president, John Dramani Mahama, could reform our music system to attract more professionals in radio and television, much like the appointment of new ministers when they assume office.

The entertainment industry needs that change. The younger ones coming up shouldn’t have to endure what some of us have been through. This is my humble 🙏 wish—for the next generations to see this music business as a career and not just fun.”

Shatta Wale’s call for industry reform has sparked conversations among fans and stakeholders, with many echoing his sentiments on the need for a more structured and professional entertainment ecosystem.
