Veteran Ghanaian musician and saxophonist Teddy Osei of Osibisa fame passes away
Teddy Osei, the legendary Ghanaian musician and saxophonist who co-founded the iconic Afro-rock band Osibisa, has passed away.
Mr. Osei was reported to have died on the morning of Tuesday, January 14, 2025, in London, at the age of 88. His demise was confirmed to Myjoyonline by Bessa Simons, the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).
Born in December 1937 in Kumasi, Teddy Osei became renowned as the leader of Osibisa, the Afro-rock band he helped establish in 1969.
From an early age, Osei demonstrated a deep interest in music, gaining exposure to various instruments during his childhood. After mastering the saxophone, he formed a band with his college friends in Sekondi. Upon graduating, he worked briefly as a building inspector before founding a group called The Comets.
By 1962, as The Comets gained popularity, Osei received a grant from the Ghanaian government to study at a private music and drama school in London. This pivotal opportunity led to the formation of Osibisa in 1969, alongside other talented musicians.
Teddy Osei leaves behind an enduring legacy as a pioneer of Afro-rock, whose music transcended borders and inspired countless fans worldwide.
