News of Yaw Sarpong’s death has continued to ripple through Ghana’s music community, with award-winning rapper Sarkodie adding his voice to the growing tributes honouring the late gospel great.

The rapper paid his respects on X on January 21, a day after the passing was made public, sharing a brief but emotional message that reflected the deep influence of the gospel icon. “RIP wofa Yaw Sarpong … Thank you for strengthening our faith in the almighty… may he keep you safe.”

Yaw Sarpong, who died on January 20, 2026, after a prolonged illness, was widely regarded as one of the architects of modern gospel music in Ghana. His work helped shape the sound and direction of the genre at a time when gospel music was gaining national prominence.
