Ayawaso East NDC Race Opens as Late MP’s Widow Hajia Amina Adam Declares

Hajia Amina Adam

Hajia Amina Adam has officially entered the race to become the National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, setting the stage for a closely watched party primary ahead of the constituency’s by-election.

The widow of the late Ayawaso East Member of Parliament announced her decision as the NDC begins preparations to select a replacement for the seat left vacant following her husband’s death. Her declaration comes alongside that of Baba Jamal, Ghana’s current High Commissioner to Nigeria, who has also confirmed his intention to contest the primary, according to a report.

The NDC has scheduled its parliamentary primary for February 7, 2026, with the winner expected to lead the party into the Ayawaso East by-election fixed for March 3, 2026.

In a press statement dated January 22, 2026, Hajia Amina Adam explained that her decision to seek the party’s mandate followed extensive consultations with party officials, community leaders and residents across the constituency. She said the move was made after careful reflection in the weeks following the death of her husband on January 4, 2026, a period she described as deeply painful for herself and her children.

She indicated that, during this time, she received appeals from different segments of the constituency, including elders, grassroots party members and youth groups, encouraging her to step forward and sustain the work her late husband had been doing in Parliament.

According to her, she ultimately agreed to contest after engaging with chiefs, imams and other opinion leaders, as well as young people who urged her to represent the constituency on the NDC ticket.

Hajia Amina Adam said her motivation is rooted in a desire to continue her husband’s commitment to public service, with a particular focus on issues affecting children, vulnerable groups and unemployed youth.

She has called on party members and constituents in Ayawaso East to rally behind her as the NDC moves toward its primary.
