Afua Asantewaa has opened up about the kind of marriage she wishes she had and she is pointing to one couple in particular as her example.
During a TikTok live session, the former Guinness World Record sing-a-thon contender reflected on the cracks in her own relationship, revealing that she often felt exposed when criticism came her way online. According to her, her husband, a veteran in the media space, stayed silent at moments she needed him most.
In contrast, she highlighted the bond between Hopeson Adorye and Empress Gifty, saying their dynamic stands out to her. She described Adorye as a partner who actively shields his wife, something she believes many marriages lack.
“Most men are under marital umbrellas but are actually single in their hearts. I really admire Hopeson Adorye for how he stands by his wife. Sometimes, you have to shelter, when you go home, you discipline the person,” she said.
The conversation comes amid growing public interest in Afua’s personal life. Afua Asantewaa recently disclosed that she and her husband are no longer together, although their divorce has not been finalised.
She pointed to several issues that led to the split, repeatedly circling back to what she sees as a lack of support during difficult public moments. Despite her husband’s decades-long career in journalism, she said he never stepped forward to defend her when she became the target of online criticism.
“My partner is a journalist with over 30 years of experience, yet he has never come out to defend me. But during the sing-a-thon, he was able to stand in front of the camera and say he is proud of his wife… I don’t have anybody to talk to, but sometimes you just have to speak the truth,” Afua Asantewaa stated.
