Broda Sammy reveals he stole fuel caps to survive in Kumasi

Brother Sammy (Broda Sammy)

Broda Sammy has opened up about a painful chapter from his early years in Kumasi, recalling how poverty pushed him and his friends into desperate acts just to survive.

In an interview on Okay FM, the gospel musician recounted how life around Suame Magazine, known for its bustling auto and metal works, became their daily hunting ground for scraps they could sell. When there was nothing to gather, they looked for other ways to make money.

That search, he admitted, sometimes led them to steal fuel caps from parked cars.

He narrated a terrifying moment when one of their attempts went wrong. While he managed to escape by hiding beneath a vehicle, one of his friends was captured and beaten to death.

“Because of poverty, my friends and I used to collect scraps to sell in Kumasi. On days when we couldn’t find any, we resorted to stealing fuel tank covers from parked cars to sell. One day, we were caught in the act.

“I managed to escape by hiding under a car, but one of my friends wasn’t so lucky. He was caught and beaten to death. I can say without hesitation that theft is not something I would ever encourage,” he said.

Despite that difficult past, the musician says his life has taken a different turn. He recently revealed that he has built a 50-room hotel in Kumasi.

He noted that the facility is expected to be officially opened to the public on April 26, 2026, at Atafoa Tigo Junction.
