Drinking Isn’t a Sin, It’s Misunderstood – Ghana Drunkards Association Clarifies

Ghana Drunkards Association defends drinking, arguing excess not alcohol itself is what scripture warns against.

The Ghana Drunkards Association has rejected suggestions that drinking alcohol is sinful, insisting the claim has no firm grounding in scripture.

According to the group, alcohol has long been mischaracterised in modern preaching, despite what they describe as clear biblical references that do not condemn its use. They argue that the issue has been wrongly framed, shifting attention away from moderation to outright rejection.

President of the Association, Moses Dry Bone, backed the position by pointing to the example of Jesus Christ, noting that one of his earliest recorded miracles involved turning water into wine. In his view, that act alone challenges the idea that alcohol is inherently evil.

He made these remarks during an appearance on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, where he urged religious leaders to refocus their messages on responsible consumption rather than blanket condemnation.

“It is false for anyone to preach that alcohol consumption is evil,” he said.

“The Bible does not speak against alcohol consumption. Instead, it encourages us to be happy, make merry, and enjoy ourselves while consuming alcohol, meat, and anything else that excites us.

“It is excessive consumption that the Bible speaks against. Overindulgence destroys the body, and so we have always encouraged our members to drink responsibly.”

Beyond the religious argument, he stressed that alcohol remains deeply embedded in Ghanaian customs, playing a visible role in major life events such as marriages, divorce rites, and funerals.

Reinforcing his earlier point, he maintained that the presence of alcohol in biblical accounts, including the miracle performed by Jesus Christ, affirms its place in everyday life.

Speaking ahead of Easter, he added that celebrating the season without alcohol is not something the Association envisions, though he was clear that discipline should guide consumption.

He ended by reminding members to stay within limits and avoid excess as they take part in the festivities.
