Funny Face Opens Up on Psychiatric Hospital Experience: “They Thought I Was Mad Too”

What was meant to help him recover ended up deepening his struggles, according to Ghanaian comedian Funny Face, who has shared more details about his stay at a psychiatric hospital.

During an appearance on Joy Prime, the comedian said the atmosphere at the facility affected him negatively and left him feeling mentally worse than when he was first admitted.

Funny Face explained that he quickly realised connecting with the other patients required more than simply observing them from a distance. To gain their confidence, he said he had to blend into their world and respond in ways they could relate to.

“You don’t have to make them think they are mad. For you to get their trust, you need to act as if you understand them,” he said.

According to him, many of the patients often opened up about their lives before arriving at the hospital, while some even shared advice he found insightful. But he noticed they became uncomfortable whenever someone behaved too differently around them or appeared overly “normal.”

Recounting one particular moment, Funny Face said a patient once invited him to share a meal of fufu that did not actually exist.

“One guy said, ‘Funny, let’s eat fufu.’ There was no fufu, just the ground, and he was eating it. So in my quest to make them know that I understood them, I joined him. The nurses were also marking me as mad,” he recounted.

Funny Face said experiences like that created the impression among nurses and doctors that he was also mentally unstable, even though he believed he was only trying to make the patients feel accepted and understood.
