Police Arrest Akofena and Two Others Over Adwoa Safo Shooting

Police have arrested Akofena and two others over the shooting of Adwoa Safo, as the number of suspects in custody reaches nine.

Police have taken into custody Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, along with two other individuals, as investigations intensify into the shooting of former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo.

According to a police statement, Akofena voluntarily reported to the Regional Police Headquarters on Monday before being transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to assist with inquiries into the June 21, 2026, incident involving his sister.

As part of the investigation, officers conducted searches at his Kwabenya residence and in his vehicle. The operation resulted in the recovery of 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition, several loaded magazines, and two Glock pistols. Police said one of the firearms is legally registered in his name.

Further investigations led to the arrest of Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson, bringing the number of suspects directly linked to the latest phase of the probe to three.

All three remain in police custody and are scheduled to be arraigned before court on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

Their arrests come on the heels of the earlier detention of six private security guards shortly after the shooting. With the latest developments, the number of individuals currently in custody in connection with the case has risen to nine.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior has suspended the operating licence of Kantanka Security Services Limited. Authorities say personnel from the private security firm have been linked to the incident, and the suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

The police stressed that investigations are ongoing.
