Nine individuals accused of involvement in the shooting incident that left former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo injured have been granted bail by the Adenta Circuit Court.
The court reportedly admitted each of the accused to bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties after they pleaded not guilty to a series of charges arising from the incident that occurred on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The accused are Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, Tamaklo Safo Jehosaphat, Kwabena Safo, Benjamin Amoakwa Sam, Badu Enoch, Richard Ayitey, Gideon Safo, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson.
They face five charges, including use of offensive weapons, possession of firearms and ammunition without lawful authority, engaging in prohibited vigilante activities, unlawful discharge of firearms within a township, and causing unlawful damage.
According to the prosecution’s account, the violence erupted at a residence in Kwabenya where a ceremony was reportedly underway to install a successor to the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, founder of the Christo Asafo Church.
Investigators say Sarah Adwoa Safo arrived at the property on June 21 but was prevented from entering by armed men stationed at the premises. The confrontation subsequently escalated, culminating in gunfire.
The prosecution told the court that the former lawmaker sustained gunshot wounds to the left side of her face, the back of her head, her left ear and her lower jaw during the incident.
Her Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was also said to have suffered extensive damage. Prosecutors estimated the value of the vehicle at GH¢450,000.
Court documents further indicated that most of the accused, described as private security guards, together with a businessman and a farmer, were arrested in possession of six Mossberg pump-action guns, three pistols, 33 rounds of 9mm ammunition and 42 AA cartridges. Prosecutors maintain that none of the weapons or ammunition was covered by a valid licence or permit.
Further searches conducted by investigators allegedly uncovered additional weapons and ammunition. The prosecution said officers retrieved two pistols loaded with 20 live rounds concealed in a bag, as well as another pistol loaded with 13 rounds.
A search at a second property said to belong to Nana Akofena allegedly led to the discovery of 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of 40mm ammunition and 25 rounds of 45mm ammunition. Prosecutors said he admitted ownership of those items.
Nana Akofena, who was arrested on June 22, reportedly denied any involvement in the shooting and told investigators that he had left the location before the incident occurred.
