Ghanaian singer KiDi has taken a humorous look back at one of the harshest punishments he received as a child, recalling how his father once kicked him out of the family home when he was only about five years old.
The award-winning musician said his childhood was marked by constant mischief, with his actions often leaving his parents questioning what kind of child they were raising.
KiDi shared the story during an interview with Kafui Dey, published on August 29, 2026, as he reflected on some of the incidents that made him a particularly difficult child to handle.
According to the singer, his energy and stubbornness frequently got him into trouble. One of his regular offences involved ruining the shoes his parents bought for him to wear to school.
“My dad kicked me out of the house when I was about 5 years old, and it was the straw of many things I had done. I was a very stubborn kid; I was notorious. When they bought me a shoe for school, I used the shoe to go and play stones, and by the time I got home, the shoe would get spoilt,” KiDi recounted.
His school uniform, he added, was another casualty of his adventurous nature.
While getting dirty while playing at school was normal for children, KiDi said the state of his uniform was often far beyond what his parents expected to see when he returned home.
“All kids go to school and play and dirty their uniforms, but the dirt on my uniform, it’s as if I fought with lions,” he stated.
The singer said his parents were repeatedly confronted with one incident after another, leaving them bewildered by his behaviour.
“Every day when I come home, they would look at me in confusion, and they wondered what kind of child I was,” he shared.
But one particular incident involving a teacher and a plate of waakye would eventually push his father to take more drastic action.
KiDi recalled that on one occasion, school had closed for the day but his parents were late to pick him up. He therefore remained outside with his teacher while waiting for them.
At some point, the teacher asked him to go to her table to pick up something. KiDi said he did not properly hear the instruction and ended up making an assumption that would get him into trouble.
“One time, school closed, and they were late to pick me up, so I was just waiting with the teacher outside. She sent me to go and pick something up from her table, but I didn’t hear exactly what she said. I assumed that she asked me to go and eat the wakye on her table. I went to the class and finished the wakye,” he recalled.
By the time he got home, his father was apparently at the end of his patience.
KiDi said his father instructed his sister to take off everything he was wearing and ordered him to leave the house with nothing, telling him to take his “notorious” behaviour elsewhere.
“When I went home, my dad told my sister to remove everything I was wearing. He said I should leave the house with nothing, and since I wanted to be a notorious child, I should go and live it somewhere else,” he narrated.
The punishment became even more dramatic when his family dressed him in only his church shoes before sending him out.
The reality of being separated from his family soon sank in. KiDi said he broke down in tears while walking along the roadside, prompting his father to call him back.
His father then used the moment to make him understand what leaving home meant and why he was crying.
“They wore me just my church shoes and nothing else and threw me out of the house. When I was walking out, I started crying by the roadside. Then my dad called me back and asked if I saw how I was crying because I was going to miss them,” he noted.
Looking back, however, KiDi admitted that the punishment did not have the desired effect immediately.
The singer said he continued with his mischievous ways even after the incident, suggesting that his childhood reputation as a troublesome child was far from over.
“I didn’t learn my lessons after that because I kept being a notorious child,” KiDi disclosed.
